Editor’s Notes, January 19, 2012: Romney Stumbles and Stammers
by Beth Connolly on January 19, 2012
As this short week draws to a close, Wall Street faced a variety of eye-catching stories today. Mitt Romney caught my eye in a few negative headlines this week, so I wanted to look a little more deeply into what happened to his campaign in the past few days. He seems to be the candidate with the strongest ties to Wall Street, at least as the media reports them, (check out his top donors–all Wall Street firms–here) and he came under fire in past weeks for his behavior during his time at Bain Capital. But this week, things only got worse for Romney (affectionately dubbed “R. Money” in Metro NY.)
Now that Cain and Perry are gone, Romney no longer has the benefit of sexual abuse scandals or candidate’s senior moments to deflect attention from his own gaping weak spots. (Though Newt Gingritch did recently refer to Romney as President Obama in a debate, the slip didn’t get enough press coverage for Romney to fully milk it.) All eyes are on Romney as he charges forward with his campaign–and as he backs away from sharing the “private” details of his financial life with voters.
From offshore accounts associated with Romney and Bain, to alleged tax evasion strategies involving hefty donations to the Church of Latter Day Saints, to stammering refusal to disclose his tax returns, Romney has a lot of explaining to do.
In the light of this, I ask you: Is Romney a candidate who represents the best interests of Wall Street? Is there another GOP candidate who would do a better job, do you think, or do you still have faith in Obama? Leave me a comment below or send me an e-mail and let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading, and as always, please send comments, thoughts, tips, or suggestions to me.

Beth, I greatly appreciate your emails on Jobs in the Wall Street Market, as that is where I have spent my career; however I do not intend on making my decision based on how well the new President will do for Wall Street. My decision will be based on the entirety of The USA, including Wall Street and I cannot imagine how anyone could decide at this moment who the choice for President of the GOP should be, but I believe we are down to 3 and maybe after FL, it will be 2, the 2 who I believe will be the ultimate GOP Choices! Thanks for the article, and I still believe President Obama is the best man to lead us forward.
